The idea was to develop a way of carrying water inspired by the nature of the biological cell, a way that leads to multiple forms of transport, useful compartments, a close relation between form and function, and little waste. This idea, which originated in a Harvard student idea brainstormed in David's class in the fall of 2008 by Michael Silvestri, Kevin Burrows, Joe Shivers, and Hugo Van Vuuren, evolved over the course of 2009 and 2010 in a collaboration with David, with David, the Harvard University scientist Don Ingber, and the designer Mathieu Lehanneur, with design production leadership by Julien Benayoun, and by Manuella Passard of LabStore. The CellBag (formely Pumpkin) was first highlighted in a fall 2010 exhibition at Le Laboratoire. Development and sale of The Cellbag supports a humanitarian project in Africa to improve local access to water using local initiative and innovation.
